and what's sad is real estate is not that cool right now. you know, in '05, '06 when the market was at the top, it was sexy, it was cool. everybody should be a real estate investor and truly, that was the time people should have been sitting on their hands, waiting to see what happened. now the market has tumbled all the way down to the bottom the stock market's insecure, gold's at an all-time high. this is the time true wealth is made, especially in specific cities. i'm investing all over the country; we'll talk about that in a minute, but this is the time wealth is made and people are standing back, scared, on the sidelines. i mean, unemployment's at an all-time high, the word on the street is real estate's no good, people are looking for a job when really, we should be looking back to how this country was formed and doing your own thing. i know i digress and go all over the place, cathy, but at the end of the day, what created this country is people doing their own thing and it's time that you, the viewer at home, gets back to realizing your destiny can be completely different if you rely on yourself. and i'll scream from mountain tops if i have to and pick selective cities across the country to go and take my message that it's real estate,

it's right now. if you have money, there's no better place to invest it. if you're broker than broke with horrible credit, i have a no money down system that is rocking for thousands of people all over the country and i want the viewers, your viewers, right now to realize it's real estate and it's right now. >> what exactly is your message, why would anybody want to jump into that now when all they hear about is negative things and fear? >> you know what contrarian thinking is, right? it's doing the opposite of everybody else. here's what we think about in real estate: we think about buying here and having the market go up and then sell for a profit, right? you at home, that's what you think real estate's about. that's not the case, that's speculating. that's like buying a stock and hoping it goes up. it's like buying gold and hoping it goes up. this is what i teach my students: we're at the bottom-- we used to be here-- we're at the bottom. i teach my students my marketing that i've learned over 22 years of doing this, by partnering with my top students, cathy, i've bought over 300 properties in the last few months alone. this is what i do.

i teach my students unique strategies to buy way below the bottom. so think about that. when you buy below the bottom, your profit's built in the day you buy. if you have money like i said, stockpile, buy as many as you can, cash flow, cash out when the market goes up or collect rents and make money every month. if you have no money, i'll teach you how to pass those amazing deals off to other cash buyers that want 'em and make your profit in the middle. again, i can say this so boldly because i have more successful students than any other real estate trainer on the planet. i have a social community with over 500 posts a day positive posts of people's lives being changed. i've had the best-selling real estate books in america for over five years now, so this is what i do and now is the time. and if i have to select certain cities throughout the country and get this message in people's hands, that's what i'll do. >> you're telling me that even with all the ups and downs all the books you've written the training you do, you still are actively investing in real estate yourself and have been for all these years.

>> yeah, i mean, here's the thing: there's a lot there could be some really amazing books out there and so-called gurus out there, but one thing that i'll share is you gotta be careful about the so-called guru that did a couple deals in the late '80s or '90s then created some program and has been selling the same program for 15 years or 10 years or trying to force you into the "theory" of real estate. i don't teach the theory of real estate. i stay sharp and in tune. this is what i do. when i say i bought over 300 properties in the last few months, that wasn't a big condominium complex. these are individual houses that are pretty much all over the country in specific locations like yours that are ready to explode. so when you do that and you're buying these $20-, $30-, $40-, $50,000 houses that used to be $150-, $200,000, you learn exactly what's going on right this minute and that's what i teach. that's why i like the live events. it's not a book that i wrote five years ago or a strategy i came up with when i was in my early 20s; this is what's working right this second. and there's no quicker way for me to get that information to people than go to their city and

that is outdated doesn't work anymore. you need a new way of thinking and all i know is by doing your own thing, you can create your own destiny and there is nothing in my opinion that even compares closely to real estate. again, i know i don't have a lot of time on your show, cathy, but i have a no money down strategy working for a mom of nine, who had nothing, was down to her last $50, who's now made over $100,000. i also have the stressed-out overworked dad who was ready to just pack it all in, he's made over a million dollars. this is all documented or i couldn't say it, because he took ownership, stopped thinking old school, started thinking new way and used my techniques my path and a plan. >> so are you telling me that the everyday person could just go out and do this and not expect it to be full time? >> all right, so i'm going to answer this very factual. most all my students who have had insane success and even little success had the same problems everybody watching does. here's one thing to know: everybody's got 24 hours in a day and everybody has obstacles

and things going on in their life that could stop them. but here's what i know: if you keep doing what you're doing right now, you're going to have another year next year like you had last year. and if that's working out for you, then great. change the channel. but if you want a different year, a better year, a path and a plan to a new life, then you have to do something different and you have to make the time. and i want to tell you, i have found the quickest, fastest and easiest path to success in real estate, because i've been doing it for 22 years. i still do it, buying over 300 properties in the last couple of months. i'm partnering with my top students. i have a path and plan that works right this minute. it starts off with plateaus of success. what i know is, i've put bogeys in place so you know that you're on your path to your first check in literally days, so you're not just thinking, "ah, i gotta work for six months to find out it doesn't work." no, give me a week of using my strategy and you will never, ever turn back. >> so, dean, you're obviously in the trenches, you've been doing this for years, so you're dealing with people every day that you're training. you do have a lot of successful

students, nobody can argue that. you very much have been successful in real estate yourself, nobody could argue that. but why are you so passionate that real estate is the answer for other people? >> the stock market's unstable gold's at an all-time high and the real estate market is what it was 15 years ago. cathy, we lost 15 years of profits, shaved right off the top. and in your area, you are at the bottom and i have strategic determining factors to prove to me you are at the bottom. if it drops a little bit who cares, because what we do is we teach our students to buy so far below the bottom that if they have money, no better place to invest it with the potential for huge returns on your money. cash flow, every single month. but if you're broker than broke with bad credit, i don't know anything else on the planet to allow you to find those deals, hand 'em off to buyers that we show you how to find and put money in your pocket. again, if this was just something i did, then you know you'd say, "that fast-talking guy's been doing it forever, of course he's lucky, now he's got money, it's easy." i have too many successful

"i wasn't sure i could do it. i wasn't sure i had enough time. but once i started, i saw a path and plan and my life changed forever." i mean, that's really what it is. i know the common threads of the

people who get success and the ones that get stuck in a rut and can never get out. the ones that are stuck focus on the negative news, focus on negative conversations just listen to what the media says, listen to what their friends and family say who aren't qualified to give them advice and they stay right where they are even though they're not happy. what i know is the people that break out of the mold, try something new-- listen my no money down strategy-- i don't care if you got all the money in the world, i can show you how to put money in your pocket in 30 days or less without risking a single penny. what else have you done for 30 days that's done nothing good for your life? there's things that we've done that don't benefit our life: have lunch every day with someone that's negative, i don't know what it is. but if you can take a couple hours a week, maybe even an hour a day, two hours a day and focus on something different, i can show you a path and a plan to a bigger better life. >> so, dean, you really do believe that this is a goldmine. right now, this is an opportunity, not a time to be fearful. >> when the real estate market is at the bottom and i can teach

pursuits of network, social and economic opportunities. that small gathering became the 100 coalition of black women. in just a few weeks, oakland will be holding their awards luncheon and recognizing women in business and community. joining me this morning is the president of oakland's 100 black women, cheryl grant. >> hi, thank you for allowing me the opportunity. >> i've heard of 100 black women a number of times and i think i've worked with them on some of your fundraising efforts. but tell us what is 100 black women about nowadays? >> it's really about making a difference in the lives of african american girls and women. we do that in a variety of ways. we have programs in which we offer. one is programs and underprograms we have positive steps which is working with girls ages 12 through 17.

the other program we have is our public service and education. they're primarily focused on giving scholarships and grants to women who are either returning to the workforce, or women who are starting their own business, or either going on to school to pursue their education. >> you've been a member for how many years? >> i've been a member going on eight years. >> so why don't you join, and why won't you tell other women to join? >> for me, i was looking for a place to give back and really make a difference. and i have a passion for youth. i think they're the future leaders of our country. and it's very important that they have role models in which they could look up to, or see that are doing similar type things so that as they aspire, they have a similar role model. these are our positive steps program, working with girls ages 1 through 17, and we do a

lot of things around leadership development around health. around financial literacy, community service. >> in business, and maybe career oriented, you're becoming mentors and role models for these young women. >> absolutely, that's the whole point of it is really to provide them with role models, and our membership is comprized of professional women. they're in leadership roles in their own right. these girls have someone that they can actually see doing things that they could potentially do. >> my impression of 100 black women has been, and always has been really strong black women knowing what they're doing in business and life. >> we do a lot of hard work. it's not easy. it's all volunteer work. but i think when you're passionate about anything, you bring your best to the table. what we have done, in one of

the programs was a financial literacy program. we're going in and teaching people how to better manage their money, especially in these economic times. you definitely want as many tools as you can get. >> the 14th annual madam cj luncheon. a lot of people don't know who madam cj luncheon was. >> madam cj walker was a phenomenal woman. a woman with a passion and a dream. i look at us and see us in that same light. basically, she had issues with her hair. struggles with her air. there were no products in the market at that time. >> we're talking about the 1800's. >> yes, we are. she went out and created products and created it into a million dollar business. >> she was the first african american woman millionaire. >> yes. it was named in recognition of her, and also about the

recognition awards luncheon. so it's about recognizing leaders that are already in the community, as well as our positive girls. we have an essay contest, in which we allow the girls an opportunity to speak to the participants at the luncheon. it's one of the most phenomenal things. have you ever been to the luncheon, rosy? we'll have to get you there. >> i've been meaning to. no, i have not. >> we give the girls and opportunity in which to speak at this lunch, which is huge. if you see, out of the 65 girls we have 30 girls compete. so was so compelling to hear their stories and their pride and how they deliver them. one girl came with her pearls and her pearl earrings and was really passionate about what she had to say. when you think about the luncheon, you think about madam cj walker, you think about the work we do. it's about taking ownership. >> i happen to know that her, i

said, her granddaughter flies out here. >> she sure does. >> from the east coast, i believe, and she comes in to attend your luncheon. >> she feels it is definitely an event that is worthwhile supporting. we typically attract from 1500 to 2,000 people. >> wow. >> it's a relatively large benefit at the san francisco marriott, in downtown san francisco at 55 4th street, san francisco marquis. it's a very big event. but the purpose of it really is about fundraising. we cannot do the work we do without financial support. and the work that we do is quality work. >> but this is women helping other women, helping young girls become successful, through mentorships. it all comes around, what goes around, comes around. >> absolutely. >> we're going to have to take a break. thank you so much for sharing the information as the lurchingen is -- the luncheon

♪[ music ♪ well there are a lot of baby boomers who are already retiring, or about to retire. and they have one thing in common, that's to try to

understand the health insurance maze called medicare. we're going to answer some basic medicare questions with our next guest, i would like to welcome janet van dusen. tell me what high cap means. >> it stands for health insurance counsel and advocacy program, which is the statewide name here in california. it is a free, nonprofit service available to people on medicare, and it's designed to help people understand medicare. understand their options for supplementing medicare, and their rights under medicare. >> i talk to my friends about medicare, no one really understands medicare until you're there. you have to start thinking about it. it's this boondoggle, and your

mind kind of gets so confused. why is it so easy for us to get confused? >> first, it's a new concept for people turning 65. prior to that they probably haven't thought much about medicare. it's a whole new health insurance plan, if you will. and medicare itself, or alone, doesn't pay for all of one's healthcare costs. so many people find it necessary, or prudent to supplement their medicare. either with a retirement plan, or if they don't have that option, with other supplemental options. and most choices can be confusing. we actually focus in on what medicare covers and what people's choices are. >> i'm glad you brought this in, because we do start to apply for social security and medicare, you get this nice little, other half an inch booklet here. it gives you all you need to

know about medicare? >> that is the basic medicare hand book that medicare expects you to read when you turn 65, or otherwise go on medicare. of course it's not the most gripping reading that anybody might have in front of them, but it is, a sort of good summary of the medicare program and the coverage option. so it's a good place to start. >> so let's try and ask some very basic questions for your answer. first of all, when does one have to apply for medicare? >> good question. most people consider applying for medicare when they turn 65. that's the magic age that most people qualify for medicare at. >> you can't get medicare until you're 65. >> some people do qualify for medicare, prior to 65, if they are disabled, and they qualify for disable through social security. otherwise, most people qualified base on age. and that age is 65. some people, however, who are

working may not want to go on medicare until they retire, at age 70, or 75. because they're not covered. >> when does it have to apply, and do your medicare paperwork, if you will? you can delay that if you're working and already have private insurance. >> you can delay that if you're working and covered under your employer group health plan. if you're not working, or you don't have insurance through the job that you might have, then it's a good idea to apply for medicare, because medicare is the main game for people 65 and older. >> so most people qualify for medicare at some point in time, when they're 65 and older, but you have to do the work. it's not just medicare knocking on your door, saying you should apply. >> right. most people now don't qualify for full retirement social security retirement income at

65. it may be 66, 66.5. if again, they're not working and they turn 65, which many people are these days, or at the edge of the baby boomer generation, they should then consider applying for medicare three months before they turn 65. and people can do that by applying online through ssa.gov, which is a pretty good website to use, or by calling social security. or by visiting a local social security office. >> now, it says medicare part, i know this is the alphabet soup. part a and b. >> parts a and b are otherwise known as original medicare. part a is called hospital insurance. it covered stays in the hospital. it also covers some stays in skilled nursing facilities. it covers home healthcare, and hospice care. part b, the other part of

original medicare is more the outpatient, or medical coverage for doctors visits, lab tests, ambulance trips and so forth. >> so a and b is one and the same with medicare. you qualify for that automatically. >> most people do. most people qualify for part a for free if they've worked for ten years or more, and paid social security taxes, or if they're married to somebody who has done that. then most people pay for part b, which carries in 2012 a monthly premium of $99.90. >> okay, then we have the rest of the alphabet. >> right. >> and that i'm lost. >> right. >> so what else are we looking at besides a and b? >> there is medicare part c, which the medicare advantage plan that people can choose to enroll in, or not, that supplement medicare. then there is medicare part d,

otherwise known as the prescription drug benefit. >> i've heard a lot of complaints, if you will, about the c and d, because you can pay such an amount of money, and there's so many things to choose from, but we have gaps in the payment plan. how does one go through that? who do you go through to find out which plan is good for me? >> well, that's when we say come to us. again, we're a free service. we train volunteers to be extremely knowledgeable in the medicare coverage, and its options. it is what we sometimes refer to as the medicare maze. so what we do is sit down face- to-face with people, by appointment usually, and sometimes we can help certainly people over the phone, to go through their questions, the coverage options, the gaps and the payment variations if you

will. the cost variations in the different plans. there are many, many plans to choose from out there, so it can be daunting and we like to help people one-on-one. >> i know there are many more questions, but we have run out of time. the thing is, we are just beginning because there's so much to learn about medicare. we've decided that we're going to visit the issue of medicare every few weeks and you can kind of talk to us about what's going on with different kinds of medicare that we need to know about. and the 800 phone number that we will be provided for the public is a statewide number? >> it's a statewide number. and people calling it from a particular county will be automatically routed to the hicap office in their account. >> thank you jennifer for being here. look for the book, if you qualify, look for the book and read it and find out more. we'll just take a short break. now that we're getting ready to retire, what can you do with

all that extra time on your hands? we'll point you to a program that can point you in the right direction. i wanted to be in the military since i was a kid. i served a total of 16

years. and at 19 years old, that's the first time i ever saw somebody die. coming back, i was raging. i started having pretty horrible nightmares. i started drinking a lot. i guess i never recognized it in myself. it all starts with going to the va. there's a whole community of veterans that just want to help you out. it's for the guys who couldn't come back you owe it to them to live well. because they're not here with their families.

♪[ music ♪ well, we just talked about people getting ready to retire. if you're about to retire and don't know what to do with all of that time on your hands, my next guest has a solution. he wants you to sign up with one brick and find the right opportunity for you. one brick is a foundation founded in san francisco.

he is rich wingerter. thank you for being here. >> thanks. >> i've heard of organizations like this, you make it so simple to volunteer, almost that you have no reason but to volunteer. you can make a major equipment for every single week, for x amount of hours. >> indeed. the idea behind it is pretty straight forward. you can come to our calender at onebrick.org. and just look for opportunities. we offer here in the san francisco bay area, which encompasses san francisco and oakland, every three to five events. you can be guardenning, you can be working with children, you

can be working with the homeless, or impoverished, or national organizations turn to us. we're very strong with the a.i.d.s. life cycle. we've worked with the craigslist boot camp, and then we go to wine and beer events. if you're looking to have a little fun, we've got that provided for you too. >> rewind back a little bit. is it always nonprofits that come to you? nonprofits and city government who need volunteers? >> this split on that is loosely 80-20. 80% is nonprofit. that's our bread and butter. the 20% we have waiting lists for these, those folks will pay us a small fee which helps keep us alive. although everyone within one brick is a volunteer. >> including yourself. >> including myself. right. so we're putting in our time so

we truly believe in this community. >> okay so a nonprofit calls and say we have to pull weeds or plant, or sort through things. they call and say, can you put out a call for us and you say yes? >> they'll come in two ways. some will be referrals from manager and they'll go to our website just like a volunteer, but it will be a event. and they go to a scheduling team. the lead of which actually works for genentec. and this team will look through what we do. can we do it in four hours? is it going to be fun for the volunteers? is there a request return? training? things like that that may weed them out. most of them, we want to accept, absolutely. >> i want to volunteer. i call on your website and find

something that sounds like fun. i sign up for it? >> yeah, you create a profile which is your name and email. we use email to track who you are. we like to keep track of how many events have you done? and when you show up at the event, your name is going to be there. it's going to say rosy chu. then the event coordinator who is also a volunteer is going to come up and ask you to sign in, and you sign in, and now you're part of one brick. >> you just come up and show what you do, and you go home. that's all you commit? >> there's a step missing. you show up, you have fun, and then you have the opportunity to hang out socially with the other volunteers. >> so you have fun volunteering, then you have more fun having fun. >> that's the idea. >> that's the thing that is a little different, so you try to make it into a little social gathering. >> we're very social. actually the history of that, it was started by three original founders, one brick working at the san francisco

beautiful day. we are looking at temperatures within a few degrees of freezing. i will bring you the current temperatures in a few moments. mostly sunny. temperatures will rebound and feel pretty good for the afternoon. in the extended forecast, notable changes, and it includes the possibility of wet weather. we begin with developing news out of san francisco. patrons at a nightclub are describing the chaos after someone opened fire this morning. alex savage is live near the nightclub not far from at&t ballpark. >> reporter: good morning. club goers tell me this was a chaotic scene. you can see crime scene investigators are still out here processing the scene. someone opened fire inside the place. it's called 330 rich. according to the officer everything spilled outside the club. this is what one police officer described as a running gun battle that extended across the street to the
